FAQ

Tip on pre-tax or post-tax?

US restaurants usually tip on the pre-tax amount; post-tax is also fine and slightly higher.

What if a service charge is already included?

Check the bill for a service charge; if it is already included, you do not need to double-tip.

Is takeout the same as dine-in?

Takeout is often 10 to 15 percent, dine-in 15 to 20; counter service can be lower.
